Elevated plasma factor VIII and D-dimer levels as predictors of poor outcomes of thrombosis in children
-
Goldenberg NA, Knapp-Clevenger R, Manco-Johnson MJ. Elevated plasma factor VIII and D-dimer levels as predictors of poor outcomes of thrombosis in children. N Engl J Med 2004; 351:1081-1088. This study evaluated the relevance to pediatric thrombosis of recently defined predictors of recurrent VTE in adults. Elevated factor VIII and D-dimer levels, whether at thrombus diagnosis or following 3-6 months standard anticoagulation therapy, were shown to be quite specific for poor outcomes of thrombosis in children, as reflected by persistent thrombosis, recurrent thromboembolism, or the development of the post-thrombotic syndrome.
