Suitability of bioresorbable cages for anterior cervical fusion
-
Cahill DW, Martin GJ, Hajjar MV, et al.: Suitability of bioresorbable cages for anterior cervical fusion. J Neurosurg 2003, 98:195-201. The authors conducted a pilot study to determine whether a bioresorbable intervertebral fusion device composed of 85/15 polylactide-polyglycolide (PLA-PGA) copolymer packed with bone autograft is a suitable alternative to promote arthrodesis after cervical diskectomy (ACD) in a caprine model.

Feasibility of a resorbable anterior cervical graft containment plate
-
Ames C, Crawford N, Chamberlain R, et al.: Feasibility of a resorbable anterior cervical graft containment plate. Orthopedics 2002, 25(suppl 10):1149-1155. The authors review the history of anterior cervical plating for one- and two-level diskectomy for degenerative disease and provide background justification for the design and testing of a cervical plate composed of a resorbable material. The cadaveric and animal in vivo testing methodologies are described, and a novel testing method for reliably quantifying graft containment is also described. Data from a representative sample are presented.

Treatment of osteomyelitis with local antibiotics delivered via bioabsorbable polymer
-
Rutledge B, Huyette D, Day D, et al.: Treatment of osteomyelitis with local antibiotics delivered via bioabsorbable polymer. Clin Orthop 2003, 411:280-287. The purpose of this study was to show the efficacy and safety of an absorbable polymer (polycaprolactone) as an antibiotic delivery vehicle for treatment of osteomyelitis. The authors concluded that bioresorbable rods of polycaprolactone are a safe and effective means of antibiotic delivery for treatment of osteomyelitis.

Use of a bioabsorbable anterior cervical plate in the treatment of cervical degenerative and traumatic disc disruption
-
Vaccaro A, Carino J, Venger B, et al.: Use of a bioabsorbable anterior cervical plate in the treatment of cervical degenerative and traumatic disc disruption. J Neurosurg 2002, 97:473-480. This paper is a preliminary report of a prospective series in which a resorbable mesh and screw system was used for graft containment in a single-level ACDF. The results of this preliminary study indicate that bioresorbable anterior cervical plating systems for single-level ACDF are both safe and effective.
