The Kentucky Senate contest was also extremely close, with Bunning (R) winning this open seat with only 50% of the vote. The VNS exit poll for this race, however, did not include a sufficient number of relevant issue questions and thus was excluded from this analysis.

Gun Control was included on the California and New York ballots and was chosen as the most important by 7% and 5% of respondents, respectively. The Environment was included on four polls: Colorado (12%), North Carolina (8%), Ohio (3%), and Washington (9%). Foreign policy was on two polls; Wisconsin (2%) and Georgia (2%). Nuclear Waste was on the Nevada poll (13%). Tobacco was on the North Carolina poll (3%). Crime and drugs was on the New York poll (8%). And Trade was on two polls: Ohio (1%) and Washington (1%).

This research builds upon the earlier findings of Petrocik and presumes that Education, Social Security, and Health Care are Democrat-owned issues, whereas Taxes are owned by the Republicans. The "ownership advantage" is not an alternative measure of issue ownership, but rather a way to explore variations in the partisan advantage that candidates enjoy on party-owned issues.
