-
Arevalo JF, Ramirez E, Suarez E, et al.: Retinal detachment in myopic eyes after laser in situ keratomileusis. J Refract Surg 2002, 18:708-714. The authors report the characteristics and surgical outcomes of RRD in myopic eyes after LASIK. Thirty-three eyes (27 patients; frequency 0.08% [33/38,823]) developed RRD after LASIK. Information regarding visual acuity after LASIK and before the development of RRD was available in 24 eyes; 45.8% (11/24 eyes) lost two or more lines of visual acuity after vitreoretinal surgery.

Incidence of retinal disease following refractive surgery in 9,239 eyes
-
Ruiz-Moreno JM, Alio JL: Incidence of retinal disease following refractive surgery in 9,239 eyes. J Refract Surg 2003, 19:534-547. The authors studied retinal disease observed in 9239 consecutive eyes after refractive surgery (including LASIK). Retinal detachment occurred at a mean 24.6 ± 20.4 months after LASIK in 11 eyes (0.36%), and choroidal neovascularization occurred a mean 30.2 ± 19.3 months after LASIK in 10 eyes (0.33%). A macular hole developed in one patient 12 months after LASIK and a macular hemorrhage developed in another patient immediately after LASIK.

Lacquer crack formation after LASIK
-
Ruiz-Moreno JM, Montero J, Alio JL: Lacquer crack formation after LASIK. Ophthalmology 2003, 110:1669-1671. The authors described the characteristics and potential mechanisms of a macular lacquer crack in a myopic patient corrected by LASIK. In this case, subretinal bleeding signals the development of a rupture of Bruch membrane. The risk of developing lacquer cracks in highly myopic patients corrected by LASIK, although uncommon, must be kept in mind.

-
Arevalo JF, Mendoza AJ, Velez-Vazquez W, et al.: Macular hole after laser in situ keratomileusis. J Refract Surg 2004, 20:85. The authors report 10 eyes (10 patients) that developed a macular hole in one eye after bilateral LASIK for the correction of ametropia. The macular hole formed at a mean of 9.1 months. Ninety percent of eyes were myopic. Posterior vitreous detachment was not present before and was documented after LASIK on 80% of eyes. A vitrectomy closed the macular hole on all six eyes that underwent surgical management. These 10 patients (eyes) reflect an incidence of 0.02% (10/46,486).

Sforza PD, Saffra NA: Laser in situ keratomileusis as treatment for anisome-tropia after scleral buckling surgery. J Cataract Refract Surg 2003, 29:1042-1044. The authors describe symptomatic anisometropia developing in a 53-year-old man after placement of a scleral buckle for repair of a RRD. Thirty-four months after the scleral buckling procedure, LASIK was performed to correct myopic astigmatism with excellent refractive and functional results.

LASIK after retinal detachment surgery
-
Sinha R, Dada T, Verma L, et al.: LASIK after retinal detachment surgery. Br J Ophthalmol 2003, 87:551-553. This is a prospective, noncomparative case series. Ten eyes of nine patients who had a myopic refractive error and had previously undergone retinal detachment surgery underwent LASIK surgery according to the standard surgical protocol. Eight eyes underwent successful LASIK surgery. LASIK may be used to correct refractive errors in eyes that have undergone retinal detachment surgery. However, scarred conjunctiva in such cases may prevent generation of optimal suction for the microkeratome.

-
Lin SC, Tseng SH: Prophylactic laser photocoagulation for retinal breaks before laser in situ keratomileusis. J Refract Surg 2003, 19:661-665. This study was performed to determine the efficacy and safety of prophylactic laser photocoagulation for retinal breaka in myopic patients (1931 eyes) undergoing LASIK. Retinal breaks were identified and treated in 39 eyes (2.02%). A significantly higher preoperative spherical equivalent refraction was noted in patients with retinal breaks compared with those without. During a mean 19-month follow-up, retinal detachment did not develop in any of the patients (except for one trauma case).
