With long-term follow up of greater than 10 years, urethral tumor recurrence was found in approximately 7% of men following cystectomy. Involvement of the prostate with tumor and the form of urinary diversion were significant and independent of risk factors for urethral tumor recurrence. The authors conclude, however, that orthotopic diversion can be done in patients with prostatic involvement if intraoperative biopsy is negative.
