Intramuscular and liver triglycerides are increased in the elderly
-
Cree MG, Newcomer BR, Katsanos CS, et al. Intramuscular and liver triglycerides are increased in the elderly. J Clin Endocrinol Metab 2004; 89:3864-3871. This is the only study to date to compare intramuscular and liver triglyceride content in young and elderly individuals. This study found increased triglycerides within muscle and liver of elderly compared to younger individuals and related them to increased metabolic risk.

J Gerontol A Biol Sci Med Sci 2004; 59:796-800. This study shows that the proportion of lean tissue as active cell mass is lower as individuals get older and proposes an explanation for increased metabolic risk and physical limitation with age.
