Although covered stents have lower rates of occlusion, they are associated with increased complications from acute cholecystitis and pancreatitis.

Comparison of duodenal stent placement with surgical gastrojejunostomy for palliation in patients with duodenal obstructions caused by pancreaticobiliary malignancies. Endoscopy 2004; 36:73-78. This study compares placement of duodenal SEMS with standard gastrojejunostomies for palliation of malignant GOO in regards to different outcomes. The median time to resumption of oral intake was shorter in the stent group compared with the surgical group. Additionally, the performance status was improved more frequently in the stent group as compared with the surgical group.

Gastrointest Endosc 2004; 60:916-920. The author conducted a retrospective review of patients who underwent placement of enteral SEMS for palliation of GOO from different endoscopic referral centers. The study identified the largest cohort to date. The majority of the patients with enteral SEMS have median duration of oral intake of 146 days. In addition, chemotherapy after enteral SEMS was independently associated with prolongation of oral intake.
