Evaluated transitional health-care services in 33 prison systems in the USA for people with AIDS, tuberculosis, hepatitis, mental illness, and/or substance-abuse needs. Although most surveyed prison systems provided some type of transitional health-care services or referrals, the extent and quality of care varied widely across prison systems and few offered adequate provision for continuity of medication-treatment regimes initiated in prison.

Clin Infect Dis 2004; 38:1754-1760. Examined responses to HAART in correctional settings and their sustained benefit after prison release through a retrospective cohort study of longitudinally linked demographic, pharmacy, and laboratory data from a Connecticut prison system for the years 1997-2002. Among 1099 people meeting study inclusion criteria, the mean CD4 lymphocyte count increased and the mean RNA level decreased during incarceration, a positive health change that was not sustained among people released to the community.

Explored the theoretical underpinnings of peer-education programs, reviews research on correctional peer-education programs, discusses the difficulties of such programs, and makes recommendations for successful peer-education implementation in correctional settings. With regard to HIV/AIDS peer-education program, they conclude that peer education may be an important tool for prison prevention programs, but that rigorously designed and evaluated studies are needed to support preliminary studies.
