Here I will do no more than say I'm keenly aware (a) that Rawls has responded to this sort of charge, switching his focus over the years from justice to legitimacy, from metaphysical to political conceptions, and so on (Jim Nelson, personal communication)

and (b) that Taylor is but one of many who level this sort of charge. Another is Michael Sandel in Liberalism and the Limits of Justice (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1982).

I believe one finds this sort of argument in Ronald Dworkin's Life's Dominion (New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1993); I'm referring to his claim that we disagree so profoundly about abortion because "we interpret the idea that human life is intrinsically valuable in different ways" (70).

Kramer's Anxiety

In another essay ("Kramer's Anxiety," in Prozac As a Way of Life, ed. C. Elliott and T. Chambers [Chapel Hill: University of North Carolina Press, 2004]) I have tried to show that Kramer sometimes suggests that Prozac can be used to "discover" the authentic self (that is, to free the self from genetic and environmental constraints) and at other times suggests that Prozac can be used by an individual to "create" her authentic self. Whether talking in terms of discovering or creating the self, Kramer seeks to show that Prozac can promote as opposed to thwart "authenticity."
