1. In a random-sample, face-to-face survey of 1,016 Turkish voters that I designed and supervised in March 2005 with funding from the U.S. Institute of Peace, only 2.8 percent of respondents who supported the AKP identified its ideology as the main reason behind their support. All subsequent discussions of current public opinion in the present essay draw on this survey. For copies of the questionnaire and findings, contact the author via sultant@uic.edu.
