    • note
    • Throughout this paper, we use the term "oral health" to refer to the health of all aspects of the mouth and related craniofacial structures - including the teeth, gums and supporting tissues, hard and soft palate, mucosal lining of the mouth and throat, tongue, lips, salivary glands, chewing muscles, and upper and lower jaws. Thus, oral health encompasses more than just healthy teeth.

    • note
    • To avoid confusion in this paper, we use the terms "speaking" and "verbal" rather than "oral" to denote ways of communicating health information in conversation; we reserve use of the term "oral" to refer to the teeth and mouth, as in "oral health."
