Markers for depression in Parkinson's disease
-
Leentjens AF, Lousberg R, Verhey FR. Markers for depression in Parkinson's disease. Acta Psychiatr Scand 2002; 106:196-201. In a logistic regression model, risk factors for depression in PD patients were investigated to find disease-specific markers. It was established that risk factors for idiopathic depression were also markers for depression in PD, the most important marker being a positive family history of depression. 'Right-sided onset' was the only PD specific risk factor able to improve the fit of the model.

-
Houeto JL, Mesnage V, Mallet L, et al. Behavioural disorders, Parkinson's disease and subthalamic stimulation. J Neurol Neurosurg Psychiatry 2002; 72:701-707. Improvement in parkinsonian motor disability induced by subthalamic stimulation is not necessarily accompanied by improvement in psychic function and quality of life. This has been debated in recent years. In this well conducted study PD patients were successfully treated for motor disability and levodopa reduction and the behavioural symptoms were evaluated. Presurgical psychiatric examination and psychological evaluation were recommended.

-
Aarsland D, Andersen K, Larsen JP, et al. Prevalence and characteristics of dementia in Parkinson disease: an 8-year prospective study. Arch Neurol 2003; 60:387-392. Eight-year prospective follow-up study of the original Norwegian population-based study of PD. The 8-year prevalence of dementia in a PD population was 78.2%. Of the original study population 37% had died or refused to participate at follow-up. This is accounted for. An elegant use of a control group makes it possible to estimate some risk factors - hallucinations at baseline and akinetic-dominant PD.

The relationship between Lewy body disease, Parkinson's disease, and Alzheimer's disease
-
Hardy J. The relationship between Lewy body disease, Parkinson's disease, and Alzheimer's disease. Ann N Y Acad Sci 2003; 991:167-170. A discussion of the nosological entities of diagnosing DLB, PD, and Alzheimer's disease. It is suggested that there is a continuum between these disease processes. In research this is important - in daily clinics it is a practical problem to handle in the best possible way for the patients!
