    • The mean field approximation used here is valid for the description of edge states and plasmon waves as long as the variations of the electron density in the waves occur on the spatial scales much larger than the inter particle distance. The applicability of this approximation has been discussed recently in connection with the spectrum of gapless edge excitations in C. de C. Chamon and X. G. Wen (to be published).
