    • note
    • The one-dimensional cavity considered in this paper can be considered as the limit of a three-dimensional cavity with length L and cross-sectional area A, as A is made large. In this case the effective volume of the mode is just V = AL. More realistic modes, such as the modes of a Fabry-Perot cavity, can also be considered as effectively one dimensional, and such modes have well-defined effective volumes.
