Thanks are also due to various people, in New Zealand and elsewhere, who encouraged and supported the researchers, especially in the early years. Particular acknowledgements are due to Charles Crothers, Colin James, Ian McAllister, Henry Valen, Richard Johnston, Paul Harris, Jack Nagel, Jenny Alford, and Andre Blais. Research assistants also put in essential contributions: Walter Forrest (1996-97); Clare Williams (1999), and Matthew Gibbons (2000). But perhaps the greatest thanks and acknowledgement should go to our many thousands of respondents, upon whose support and participation we rely absolutely.

The NZES also incorporates an earlier 1987 study involving a post-election telephone survey, partly internally funded by the University of Auckland, and partly funded by some private sector donors, including the National Business Review (NBR). which published the most comprehensive analysis of the data. In retrospect, this is somewhat ironic, given the negative publicity about our 1999 campaign study a very different NBR editorial team sought to distribute twelve years later. While the 1987 NZES was based on a shorter questionnaire, it has some value in providing time series for some core items.

The complete merged dataset for 1999 includes 5972 cases. 87.6 per cent of the post-election data was collected by mail questionnaire, the remainder by telephone. The questionnaire and frequencies for this data are available from our website at www.nzes.org, as are copies of many of the recent papers cited in footnotes below.
