    • The defining characteristic of a vertical merger is that the product or service offered by one firm can be used as an input to or as a complement of the product or service produced by the other firm. Examples include a merger between a manufacturer and a distributor, a merger between two manufacturers, one of which produces an end product and the other a component of that end product, or a merger of firms that produce complementary products used together by consumers
