A well-designed study evaluating the major risk factors for oral cancer in young patients. This study found that although young patients have a high rate of exposure to tobacco and alcohol, the duration of exposure is usually too short to develop an SCC. They suggest that other etiologic factors should be investigated in young patients with oral cavity SCC.

[Epub ahead of print.] A well-designed matched-pair analysis comparing young and older patients with oropharynx and larynx SCC. All patients underwent primary radiotherapy. Cause-specific survival was similar for both groups.
60. Iype EM, Pandey M, Mathew A, et al. Squamous cell cancer of the buccal mucosa in young adults. Br J Oral Maxillofac Surg 2004; 42:185-189. This paper is a retrospective analysis of 46 patients with buccal cancer under age 35 years. They were not compared with an older cohort of patients. The 5-year survival rate was 61%. Nonsmoking patients had a worse prognosis than smokers.
