W.J. Yang, D. Yang, S. Na, G. Sandusky, Q. Zhang, and G. Zhao Dicer is required for embryonic angiogenesis during mouse development J Biol Chem 280 2004 9330 9335 The authors report their study of an interesting non-null allele of Dicer. Embryos containing this allele survive to mid-embryogenesis. This allele removes the 5′ end of the Dicer gene. It is still not clear what the function of this part of the Dicer gene is.

Microarray analysis shows that some microRNAs downregulate large numbers of target mRNAs
-
L.P. Lim, N.C. Lau, P. Garrett-Engele, A. Grimson, J.M. Schelter, J. Castle, D.P. Bartel, P.S. Linsley, and J.M. Johnson Microarray analysis shows that some microRNAs downregulate large numbers of target mRNAs Nature 433 2005 769 773 In this exciting paper, the authors demonstrate that arrays can be used to detect targets of miRNA genes. Previously, it was thought this was not possible, because the vast majority of vertebrate miRNAs appear to regulated gene expression only at the translational level. They propose that a decrease in translation results in a small decrease in transcribe stability, which can be detected using arrays.

Conserved seed pairing, often flanked by adenosines, indicates that thousands of human genes are microRNA targets
-
B.P. Lewis, C.B. Burge, and D.P. Bartel Conserved seed pairing, often flanked by adenosines, indicates that thousands of human genes are microRNA targets Cell 120 2005 15 20 The authors use data generated from a computer program they designed to suggest that a third of all human genes are targets of miRNAs. In the supplementary information provided in this paper, a useful table of miRNA target genes is provided.

••], the authors sequenced a large number of miRNAs from 10 different primate species. Using this pool of miRNAs they identified conserved elements present in miRNAs. They then used this information to identify additional miRNAs by scanning whole-genome alignments of various vertebrate organisms.
