Transmission of hepatitis B, hepatitis C and human immunodeficiency virus through unsafe injections in the developing world: model-based regional estimates. Bull. The study was not confined to immunization services, although immunization was identified as being a potential risk.

    • Drain PK, Nelson CM, Lloyd JS. Single-dose versus multi-dose vaccine vials for immunization programmes in developing countries. Bull. World Health Organization 81(10), 726-731 (2003). Presents a programmatic and economic comparison of the major differences between multidose and single-dose vials, with special reference to their use in developing country programs. Concludes that multidose formats are likely to be the most appropriate for cheaper vaccines and in settings where cold-chain storage capacity is restricted, and single-dose formats will be favored where there are problems with unsafe injection practices or for the more expensive vaccines.

Successful immunization of infants with and without maternal antibody by aerosolized measles vaccine (II) Vaccine comparisons and evidence for multiple antibody response. JAMA 251(18), 2363-2371 (1984). Describes the use of an aerosolized inhaled measles vaccine as one possible means other than needle and syringe for administering measles vaccine in a mass campaign. School children receiving the vaccine showed excellent seroconversion rates.
