    • Refractive indices were measured using a Bansch and Lomb Abbe refractometer, while the dielectric constants were determined from at least four solutions using a Kahl Scientific Instrument type DM01 diplometer. In a control experiment the dipole moment of pyridine was determined. The value was within 2% of the literature value.

    • Recently the orientational influence of the aromatic solvents benzene and hexafluorobenzene on dipolar heteroaromatics as reflected by proton chemical shifts, has been used to assign the direction of the dipole. Both phosphabenzene and arsabenzene behave similarly to the group VI heterocyclopentadienes. That is, the ring protons experience up field shifts in hexadeuterobenzene relative to carbon tetrachloride, while very small shifts are seen in hexaflurobenzene. On this basis the negative end of the dipole is at the hetero atom, in agreement with our results
