    • Some of these questions were raised in the intense discussions that took place during the program ``Chiral Dynamics in Hadrons and Nuclei'' held at the Institute for Nuclear Theory at the University of Washington, Seattle, 1995.

    • This situation is qualitatively different from isospin symmetric nuclear matter in which only the strong interactions are in equilibrium. For the nearly isospin symmetric matter encountered in relativistic heavy ion collisions, the dynamical time scales are too short to allow strangeness violating processes to equilibrate.

    • Equation ( refthresh1) resembles the corresponding equation in chiral approaches (see Eq. (12), for example, of Ref. citeekp) if it is linearized by setting cos theta=1. However, we notice that here the condensate contributes to Eq. ( refhyp5) whereas in chiral models the contribution appears in the effective chemical potentials and effective masses. Also, the individual baryon contributions are not weighted in the same fashion in the two approaches. Thus, non trivial differences exist between the present treatment and previous chiral formulations. Further discussion is given in Sec. III.
