3. Contrary to a widely held misconception "First, do no harm." is not in the Hippocratic Oath, though Hippocrates did write something similar elsewhere. However, his eponymous oath does include these words: "Whatever, in connection with my professional service, or not in connection with it, I see or hear, in the life of men, which ought not to be spoken of abroad, I will not divulge, as reckoning that all such should be kept secret." The sentiment of the latter statement is embodied in the privacy provisions of HIPAA, which perhaps should be known as the Hipaacratic Oath.
