    • note
    • If the excitation route involves a S intermediate state, contributions from terms with uDf -Diu and uDf +Diu interfere with opposite phases for excitation from the two levels of a L-doublet pair. Thus the observation of different anisotropy with excitation from such a pair of levels is direct evidence for the involvement of a S intermediate state. However, if all transitions involving such doublets are unresolved within finite linewidths, summing over both signs of L is then equivalent to summing over such pairs of transitions, and the interference cancels.

    • note
    • The anisotropic distribution described by Eq. s10d is the spatial probability density function of the excited state. Throughout this paper we will assume axial recoil, with or without prior framework rotation, and equate the anisotropic moments with the recoil anisotropy parameters bn, except where otherwise noted.
