    • The value of this splitting depends on the wave-vector direction. Obviously, in the absence of external magnetic field, due to the Kramers degeneracy, two states of opposite wave vector and opposite spin are degenerate, so that the populations of the up- and down-spin electrons, averaged over all directions, are equal. The existence of a spin-split band structure does not imply any magnetization.
