Previous determinations of these rate constants by Fenton's reaction method gave 2-3 times higher values (Walling. C.; El Taliawi, G. M.; Johnson, R. A. J. Am. Chem. Soc. 1974, 96, 133), which are in disagreement with the gas phase results.

It is interesting to note, however, that when the radical site is shifted from the α-carbon to the carbonyl carbon, hydration of the carbonyl group becomes extremely rapid, as has been reported for the acetyl radical (Schuchmann, M. N.; von Sonntag, C. J. Am. Chem. Soc. 1988, 110, 5698).
