5. Maughan B, Rowe R, Messer J, et al. Conduct disorder and oppositional defiant disorder in a national sample: developmental epidemiology. J Child Psychol Psychiatry 2004; 45:609-621. This is an important analysis of a UK cohort of 5- to 15-year-old children and adolescents. The authors examined age trends, sex ratios, and patterns of comorbidity in conduct disorder and ODD. This is one of the few studies that differentiated between these two disorders.

7. Keenan K, Hipwell A, Duax J, et al. Phenomenology of depression in young girls. J Am Acad Child Adolescent Psychiatry 2004; 43:1098-1106. This study examined the prevalence of depressive symptoms, and the association between depression and anxiety in 2451 girls aged 5-8 years. They also investigated the association between care givers' and children's reports. The study concluded that the association between the two reports was low.
8. Masi G, Millepiedi S, Mucci M, et al. Generalized anxiety disorder in referred children and adolescents. J Am Acad Child Adol Psychiatry 2004; 43:752-760. This study used the Diagnostic Interview for Children and Adolescents to reach a DSM-IV diagnosis. The authors studied the comorbidity of 157 outpatients with a diagnosis of GAD.
9. Foley DL, Pickles A, Maes HM, et al. Course and short-term outcomes of separation anxiety disorder in a community sample of twins. J Am Acad Child Adol Psychiatry 2004; 43:1107-1114. The authors of this study assessed the course and short-term outcome of 8- to 17-year-old children with a diagnosis of separation anxiety disorder in a community setting. They found that children with persistent separation anxiety also had a high prevalence of ODD. They also found that a minority of the children with a persistent separation anxiety, particularly those with comorbid ODD, had a significant risk for developing a depressive disorder.
10. Goodwin RD, Gotlib IH. Panic attacks and psychopathology among youth. Acta Psychiatr Scand 2004; 109:216-221. This study determined the association between panic attacks and other disorders among 1 285 young people aged 9-17 years from the general population, using the Diagnostic Interview Schedule. A strong association was found between panic attacks and a range of affective and other anxiety disorders. No association was found with substance abuse.

13. Gillberg C, Gillberg IC, Rasmussen P, et al. Co-existing disorders in ADHD-implications for diagnosis and intervention. Eur Child Adol Psychiatry Supplement 2004; 13:80-92. This is an interesting review paper by the Gothenburg team, which provides useful information on the assessment and treatment needs of children with ADHD and comorbid disorders. The authors highlighted the need for child psychiatrists seeing children with ADHD to train in general neuropsychiatry, because of the high association between ADHD and other neuropsychiatric disorders.
14. Dixon A, Howie P, Starling J. Psychopathology in female juvenile offenders. J Child Psychol Psychiatry 2004; 45:1150-1158. A total of 100 juvenile offenders were matched with a comparison group of 100 females in order to investigate the present and lifetime psychological disorders in female juvenile offenders. The authors also explored the relationship between mental health status and sociodemographic, family and trauma variables. High rates of psychiatric comorbidity were found among juvenile offenders.

This study includes adolescents as well as adults. The study investigated the lifetime prevalence of axis I disorders in a population with eating disorders. The authors found that 74% of the 184 patients with a diagnosis of an eating disorder had a comorbid lifetime axis I disorder.

22. Samet S, Nunes EV, Hasin D. Diagnosing co-morbidity: concepts, criteria, and methods. Acta Neuropsychiatr 2004; 16:9-18. This is an interesting report on how various diagnostic instruments measure comorbid psychiatric disorders. The paper also reviews the evolution of the concept of comorbidity. Although this primarily focuses on the diagnosis of substance abuse, it also offers further clarification of the relationship between the classification systems used in psychiatry and the prevalence of comorbidity.

International consensus statement on attention-deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and disruptive behaviour disorders (DBDs): clinical implications and treatment practice suggestions. Eur Neuropsychopharmacol 2004; 14:11-28. At the request of Johnson and Johnson (sponsor), 11 international experts in child and adolescent psychiatry were selected by Professor Stan Kutcher to address the concern that many youngsters with ADHD do not receive appropriate treatment.
32. Rohde P, Clarke G, Mace DE, et al. An efficacy/effectiveness study of cognitive-behavioural treatment for adolescents with co-morbid major depression and conduct disorder. J Am Acad Child Adolesc Psychiatry 2004; 43:660-668. This is the first randomized controlled trial of a psychosocial intervention with adolescents with major depressive and conduct disorder. The study concluded that, although the cognitive-behavioural approach appeared to be an effective short-term treatment for depression in adolescents with multiple disorders, it was not found to improve conduct symptoms.

The authors investigated the response to treatment of 182 adolescent drug abusers, who were grouped according to comorbidity. Those adolescents with drug abuse plus externalizing and internalizing comorbid disorders responded to treatment but returned to intake levels of substance use 1 year after discharge. Young people without comorbidity had a better outcome.
