    • As no measurement of σ Yb (T) could be performed due to competing UC processes, the approximation σ Yb (T) ∝ exp (- k B T / E q) was used, were E q denotes an empirical quenching energy and is used as a fitting parameter. This form accurately describes the temperature dependence of a (Lorentzian) excitation cross-section [16]. The lines shown in Fig. 3(a)-(d) were calculated using E q = 85 cm - 1.
