The effective mass concept in nonconjugated molecules is not an obvious one. For one point of view, see Joachim, C., and Magoga, M. Chem. Phys. 281 2-3 2002 347

note
-
If the molecule is chemisorbed on the metal surface and assumes a configuration that maximizes its interaction with the substrate, charge exchange with the substrate may be so efficient that a hole (electron) in the molecule can be near to completely screened by the other electrons of the molecule-substrate complex, so that the molecule remains neutral. This may be the case if an aromatic molecule lies flat on the surface. In such a case, there will not be an image potential in the substrate and no polarization of neighbors, as no effective charge is localized on the molecule.

note
-
For molecules and polymers now regularly used in organic light-emitting diodes and field effect transistor research, this is becoming less of a problem.

note
-
In recent work, we (DC, AK) found that, if the top contact to a molecular film that is chemically bound to a substrate is made of a material reactive with the substrate/molecule interface, and can penetrate between the molecules, then it can also change the original substrate/molecule interface. This adds another source of heterogeneity.
