OCLC-MARC is based on MARC 21 Format for Bibliographic Data (Washington: Library of Congress, Cataloging Distribution Service, 1999), a standard jointly maintained by the Library of Congress and the National Library of Canada. MARC 21 is widely used in the United States, Canada, and Australia.

In the context of standards directly relevant to the CORC System, OCLC has voting or other representation in organizations that develop/maintain/govern: HTML, XML, RDF, MARC 21, UNIMARC, Unicode, and the Dublin Core Metadata Element Set.

Some differences will be encountered for some records-CORC will not impose WorldCat's record size limits for example, and some data available in the Dublin Core view will not be visible in the MARC view (or part of the WorldCat record), but most users using most records will not notice significant differences in the metadata visible in OCLC-MARC form in the respective databases.
