    • In mosaics of much larger images we found even longer correlation lengths: Regions many tens or hundreds of microns in extent wherein holes were on average significantly larger or smaller, more interconnected or less, and with smoother or more jagged rims. The degree of variability was greater between samples than across a given sample. We believe that the (poorly controlled) kinetics of drying is the key variable.

    • This interpretation is also consistent with the finding that friction force on Layer #2 does not change appreciably if the layer is further thickened by depositing films from higher concentration solutions. Studies of film softening via elevated temperature and humidity are underway to identify the region of parameter space in which layer-specific tribological differences do in fact result from differences in substrate nearness.
