    • Shinzo Abe is a grandson of the late Prime Minister Nobusuke Kishi, whose brother Eisaku Sato also became Prime Minister. Kishi was a cabinet member during the war, spent years in prison as a war criminal, and forged a revised U.S.-Japan Mutual Security Treaty in 1960 amid massive anti-America rallies. Kishi was also a lifelong friend of Richard Nixon. Abe's popularity derived in part from his looks, and the fact that the family members of those kidnapped by North Korea came to count on him most among the Koizumi cabinet members.
