14. The O1s x-ray absorption (XA) spectrum of bulk ice is rather structureless with a strong continuum peak centered at around 540 eV. If electron yield is used to measure the XA spectrum, a considerable amount of intensity in the spectrum is due to surface species. It has recently been shown that the preedge feature in the XA spectra results from species in a broken hydrogen bond situation, e.g., in the present study surface species and possible defects in the ice film. For excitation energies other than this preedge feature, i.e., for excitation of bulk water molecules addressed in this study, we observe no (or very small) dependence in the experimental XE spectra.
