It is important to note that the effective dimensionality d of the response of the gate is determined by the ratio of its various dimensions to the distance to the dot. The potential fluctuations induced at a distance z by a metallic slab of width w' much smaller than z can be described as if the wire were two-dimensional (see the Appendix), even if the width is much larger than its Fermi wavelength.
