14. For the relevant δ range, the atoms do not absorb photons from the downward-propagating beam [see Fig. 1(b)]. Because of polarization considerations, horizontal beam absorption rates are smaller than the vertical rate by 4 times.

17. This analogy is not rigorous since face-centered-cubic crystals lack the lattice points along corner connecting lines that are observed in the experiment.
