This is an excellent and comprehensive review of the diagnosis and management of CMV in the fetus and newborn. The authors also discuss the controversies surrounding universal prenatal screening for CMV.

J Clin Microbiol 2002; 40:3689-3693. Two commercially available methods to differentiate between past and recent infection were compared. The results indicate that the IgG avidity assay and the CMV glycoprotein B recombinant enzyme immunoassay may be complementary but neither test is superior to the other.

The authors recommend monthly ultrasound follow-up if amniotic fluid PCR results are negative.
