Prognosis and clinical evaluation of infection caused by Rhodococcus equi in HIV-infected patients
-
Torres-Tortosa M, Arrizabalaga J, Villanueva JL, et al.: Prognosis and clinical evaluation of infection caused by Rhodococcus equi in HIV-infected patients. Chest 2003, 123:1970-1976. This is a report of a multicenter study of the clinical and prognostic factors of 67 HIV patients infected by R. equi. This is the largest series published to date of this uncommon infection, and it provides important information about the imaging appearance, symptoms, and clinical outcome of this infection.

-
Gold JA, Rom WA, Harkin TJ: Significance of abnormal chest radiograph findings in patients with HIV-1 infection without respiratory symptoms. Chest 2002, 121:1472-1477. The radiographic appearance of pneumococcal pneumonia in adults is unaltered by HIV-1-infection in hospitalized Kenyans
-
French N, Williams G, Williamson V, et al.: The radiographic appearance of pneumococcal pneumonia in adults is unaltered by HIV-1-infection in hospitalized Kenyans. AIDS 2002, 16:2095-2096. This study shows that HIV-infected patients with pneumococcal pneumonia have the same characteristic chest radiographic findings as seronegative patients with this infection.

Infectious pulmonary nodules in immunocompromised patients. Usefulness of computed tomography in predicting their etiology
-
Franquet T, Muller NL, Gimenez A, et al.: Infectious pulmonary nodules in immunocompromised patients. Usefulness of computed tomography in predicting their etiology. J Comput Assist Tomogr 2003, 27:461-468. This paper shows that in immunocompromised patients with nodules of an infectious cause, the presence of nodules <10 mm in diameter is suggestive of a viral infection.

Clinical and radiographic predictors of etiology of computed tomography-diagnosed intrathoracic lymphadenopathy in HIV-infected patients
-
Jasmer RM, Gotway MB, Creasman JM, et al.: Clinical and radiographic predictors of etiology of computed tomography-diagnosed intrathoracic lymphadenopathy in HIV-infected patients. J AIDS 2002, 31:291-298. Investigating 110 HIV-infected patients with intrathoracic lymphadenopathy on chest CT, the authors found that opportunistic infections, bacterial pneumonia, and lymphoma are the most common causes. These authors also identified specific clinical and radiographic features, which can suggest these particular diagnoses.
