note
-
There was a meeting aboard the Storezhevoy but not for the purpose of leaving her Baltic port of Riga to make a run for Sweden. Her altruistic zampolit (political deputy), Valery M. Sablin, was immensely influential and persuasive with the crew. Having locked the captain in a below decks compartment, the plan was to get underway, steam into Leningrad harbor, and foment a new revolution to rediscover the original ideals of the Bolshevik revolution which had been corrupted by Party-member privilege and abandonment of original revolutionary social goals. The scheme was foiled by the early alarm of a crew member who sneaked over the side. The leader of the failed attempt, Valery Sablin, now lies dead in an unmarked and unknown grave.
