    • For rare-gas clusters, the concepts of inner and outer ionization, the first being the ionization of an electron out of an atomic orbital into the cluster environments, the latter the process of an electron leaving the cluster as a whole, have proven to be very useful. If one is dealing with the valence electrons of a metal cluster, the inner ionization step is skipped, since these electrons can already move freely throughhout the cluster. From the second shell onwards, metal clusters should not behave differently from rare-gas clusters.
