Since 1989, competitive authoritarian regimes have existed in at least 37 countries in East Asia (Cambodia, Malaysia, Taiwan), the Americas (Dominican Republic, Guyana, Haiti, Nicaragua, Mexico, Peru), Central Europe (Albania, Croatia, Macedonia, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia), the former Soviet Union (Armenia, Belarus, Georgia, Russia, Ukraine), and sub-Saharan Africa (Cameroon, Côte d'Ivoire, Ghana, Kenya, Madagascar, Mozambique, Senegal, Tanzania, Zambia, Zimbabwe).
