O'Connor, "Writing Critical Ethnography: Dialogue, Multivoicedness, and Carnival in Cultural Texts," Educational Theory 38, no. 1 (Winter 1988): 95-109, The authors see carnival within the context of critical theory, as an expression of oppressed voices. I do not see any evidence that Bakhtin ever intended his concept of carnival to characterize a power struggle of oppressed groups. On contrary, Bakhtin was explicitly anti- Marxist and remarkably indifferent to the issues of class struggle, at least in works published under his own name.
