    • In the field of polyanilines, including sulfonate groups covalently bonded to the polymer backbone, there are publications on materials synthesized in quite different ways denoted, without distinction, with the abbreviation for sulfonated polyaniline (SPAN). While they could have similar chemical composition, the synthetic procedure could have a profound influence on the distribution of sulfonate groups in the polymer backbone and/or the polymer properties. In that way, the data obtained with one material not necessarily is comparable with the data obtained with other. To clarify the nomenclature, it seems reasonable to specify the synthetic procedure in the polymer name: SPANe = polymer prepared by electrophilic sulfonation of emeraldine (50% sulfonation), HSPANe = polymer prepared by electrophilic sulfonation of pernigraniline (75% sulfonation), SPANn = polymer prepared by nucleophilic addition of sulfite ions to polyaniline (variable degree of sulfonation), SPANc = polymer prepared by copolymerization of aminosulfonic acid and aniline (variable degree of sulfonation).
