    • For the Donation as it appears in Gratian, consult the Corpus iuris canonici, pars prior Decretum magistri Gratiani, ed. Aemilius Ludwig Richter (Leipzig, 1879). The Donation is at distinctio XCVI, ch. 14, 342-45. Properly speaking, the document is referred to as the Constitutum Constantini. The text as it appeared in Gratian's Decretum began in the middle of the decree with the so-called Donatio. The editor who inserted the decree into the Decretum excerpted only part of the text from the longer, older recension preserved in the Pseudo-Isidorean decretals. For Valla's use of the edict as it appeared in Gratian, see Setz, Lorenzo Vallas Schrift, 39-41. For an analysis of the entire decree and its insertion into Gratian, consult Christopher Coleman, Constantine the Great and Christianity (New York, 1914), 176-78. On the antiquity of the Pseudo-Isidorean recension, see Horst Fuhrmann, Einfluss und Verbreitung pseudoisidorischen Falschungen, Schriften des Monumenta Germaniae Historica, XXIV (Stuttgart, 1972), pt. • I use the term Donatio in this essay to specify the text of the decree, and the terms Donation, edict, decree, and Constitutum Constantini to refer in a more general sense to the Donation of Constantine.
