Left ventricular remodeling after primary coronary angioplasty: Patterns of left ventricular dilation and long-term prognostic implications
-
Bolognese L, Neskovic AN, Parodi G, Cerisano G, Buonamici P, Santoro GM, et al. Left ventricular remodeling after primary coronary angioplasty: patterns of left ventricular dilation and long-term prognostic implications. Circulation 2002; 106:2351-2357. Detailed study of 284 patients 1 and 6 months after acute myocardial infarction and subsequent percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA) demonstrating two key points: (1) left ventricular (LV) dilatation after PTCA despite infarct-related artery patency; (2) post-myocardial infarction LV dilatation remains prognostic after PTCA.

End-systolic volume index at 90 and 180 minutes into reperfusion therapy for acute myocardial infarction is a strong predictor of early and late mortality
-
Migrino RO, Young JB, Ellis SG, White HD, Lundergan CF, Miller DP, et al. End-systolic volume index at 90 and 180 minutes into reperfusion therapy for acute myocardial infarction is a strong predictor of early and late mortality. Circulation 1997; 96:118-121. A subset of the Global Utilisation of Streptokinase a t-PA for Occluded Coronary Arteries (GUSTO)-I trial, this study looked at 1300 patients who underwent ventriculography during thrombolytic therapy and found that end-systolic volume index at 90 and 180 min was a strong predictor of 30-day and 1-year mortality.

Left ventricular end-systolic volume as the major determinant of survival after recovery from myocardial infarction
-
White HD, Norris RM, Brown MA, Brandt PWT, Whitlock RML, Wild CJ. Left ventricular end-systolic volume as the major determinant of survival after recovery from myocardial infarction. Circulation 1987; 76:44-51. Clearly established end-systolic volume (ESV) as having the greatest prognostic significance after myocardial infarction (MI). Also was unique in identifying the amount of myocardium at risk rather than artery lesion severity as a predictor of increasing ESV after MI.
