    • The single-crystal Ag(001) substrate was cleaned in UHV by repeated cycles of Ar ion sputtering and annealing. The dl/dV spectra were acquired with the use of standard lock-in techniques (11). We used the convention that the bias across the STM tunnel junction (V) is the voltage of the sample with respect to the tip.
