    • Optically active pinene (as determined by CD) was used as supplied. The d and l solutions of arabinose were prepared at concentrations of 1 part sugar to 2 parts water (2.46 M), filtered and stirred, and measurements were taken at least 5 h after preparation of the solutions (see [3]). We observed that the racemic 2.46 M solutions of arabinose did precipitate when not stirred. The optical rotations of the pinene and the arabinose solutions were determined before and after laser irradiation.
