    • A Lifshitz point is conventionally characterized by vanishing amplitude of the order parameter and diverging period of the superstructure. We use the same term, here, for a related, but somewhat different type of transition in which the distance between stripes (or bubbles) diverges at the critical point, while the size of the bubbles and the density profile inside them remains constant.

    • The Brazovskii argument [10] applies directly at T = 0, where the Wigner crystal is long-range ordered. At T > 0, where the Wigner crystal has only quasi-long-range order, the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless-Halperin-Nelson scenario of a sequence of two continuous transitions with an intermediate hexatic phase competes with a first order direct transition. The present analysis yields the stronger conclusion that in the Coulomb case, a first order transition is forbidden.
