7. After submission of our Letter, a one-way barrier for atoms was independently proposed by Ruschaupt and Muga and subsequently published in Phys. Rev. A 70, 061604 (2004). The main focus of that paper was optimization of the one-way barrier using stimulated Raman adiabatic passage, however the application to cooling and phase-space compression was not considered.
