Comprehension of the neurobiology of PTSD is very helpful to understanding its clinical manifestations and may guide future efforts at prevention and treatment.

    • Duggan A, McFarlane E, Fuddy L, et al. Randomized trial of a statewide home visiting program: impact in preventing child abuse and neglect. Child Abuse Negl 2004; 28:597-622. Although this well-written review reports a disappointing outcome, that home visiting programs failed to prevent child abuse, the authors' excellent analysis of the program components identifies the inadequate support of the home visitors with appropriate training as a possible explanation. Their thorough consideration of what happens to small demonstration projects when they are 'scaled up' for use in the real world is a must-read for anyone trying to translate child welfare theory into practice.
