Hypertrophy of the nonembolized liver was associated with an increase in serum TGF-α at 14 days suggesting that its measurement may be helpful in planning subsequent hepatectomy.

Ann Surg 2003; 238:843-850. A prospective randomized study on 100 patients undergoing major liver resection to evaluate the impact of ischaemic preconditioning. Postoperative serum transaminase levels were significantly lower in preconditioned than in control patients, with increased benefit in younger patients, longer duration of inflow occlusion, where resected volume <50%, and in the presence of steatosis.

Transplantation 2003; 75:1313-1317. A prospective study measuring portal venous pressure (PVP) in 79 cases of LDLT. Recipients of SFS grafts had significantly higher PVP. Patients with elevated mean PVP early in the first week demonstrated significantly worse survival, and higher incidence of bacteremia, cholestasis, prolonged prothrombin time, and ascites. Splenic artery ligation effectively reduced PVP with improved survival.
