Clark, M. W. (2003), C. G. Jung and numinosity, retrieved October 11, 2003 from http://earth-pages.tripod.com/JungNuminosity.html. This article is excellent as an introduction to the concept; it also deviates widely into subjects and concerns that are not covered by the present article. The major focus of the concept for present purposes is the idea of numinosity as a quality of affect, in turn associated with particular kinds of subjective experiences.

On a distinction between hypothetical constructs and intervening variables
-
MacCorquodale, K., and Meehl, P. E. (1948), On a distinction between hypothetical constructs and intervening variables, Psychological Review, 55, 95-197 This article gives a legitimacy to the existence of a set of scientific concepts (hypothetical constructs) which "have a cognitive, factual reference in addition to the empirical data which constitute their support." These concepts are distinguished from scientific concepts (intervening variables) which "have no factual content surplus to the empirical functions they serve to summarize." Hypothetical constructs then have an assumed existence beyond empirical observation and measurement, and/or they can be dealt with for theoretical purposes as if that were so, which then allows for psychodynamic theorizing.
